Summary
The relationship between Helmut Schmidt and Karl Popper, which is described and analysed in this essay, shows just how useful and sustainable an impact philosophical insights may have on political action. In addition to the special ‘in-between’ (Martin Buber) of statesman and philosopher and the way in which counselling is experienced, important attitudes such as Socratic non-knowledge and the necessity and limits of tolerance are also discussed and reflected upon. In addition, the question of how this fundamental philosophical practice can prove itself in times of crisis in a democracy and contribute to ensuring that this form of open society remains truly open is explored.
