Summary

Die politischen Beziehungen zwischen Italien und Deutschland sind vielseitig und tief, aber seit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges haben sich beide Länder strukturell entfremdet. Die Autorin untersucht diese Veränderungen und zeigt, wie Solidarität unter Freunden zunehmend durch pragmatischen Individualismus verdrängt wird. Damit adressiert die Studie gleich zwei Forschungslücken in der bestehenden Literatur: Sie versucht eine Theoretisierung bilateraler Beziehungen in der internationalen Politik, und liefert eine systematische Analyse des deutsch-italienischen Verhältnisses. Aus einem konstruktivistischen Verständnis internationaler Beziehungen wird ein Drei-Ebenen-Modell entwickelt, das Interaktionen, Interessen und Identitäten in den Fokus nimmt. Im empirischen Teil geben sechs Fallstudien tiefe Einblicke in die Realität deutsch-italienischer Beziehungen. Basierend auf umfangreichen Analysen von Presseberichten, Regierungsdokumenten und Experteninterviews, zeichnen sie ein Bild entfremdeter Partner, die die Grundlagen ihrer Beziehung neu aushandeln müssen. Insofern ist das Buch auch ein Plädoyer für eine erneuerte deutsch-italienische Kooperation in Europa.
