Summary

Criticism of the »repressed« past and the whitewashing of victims groups have catalyzed fundamental social debates since the 1980s. At the same time, memory was founded as a scientific paradigm and quickly progressed to become a classic concept of Cultural Studies. After two decades of working through European nations' traumatic burdens of memory, one aspect is now gaining increasing significance: memory as an instance of reflection. From the observational position of the postmèmoire, this volume looks towards the field of »memory« itself. The articles interrogate theoretical positions and analyze negotiations, conflicts and cultural practices.
