Summary

The attempt to generate meaning from the profundity of melancholy brings the arts, and literature in particular, into the focus of this book. For many centuries, they have been under the sign of melancholy and its ruler Saturn, accompanying the developments of the times. Their way of creating their own idiom for melancholy provides clues to the nature of artistic creativity. This creative activity is meaningful with regard to the 'character' of melancholy, but also with regard to the 'nature' of the arts and is closely connected to all those achievements of understanding in reception in which the ego of the melancholic enters into a dialog with the subjectivity of the recipient.
