Pitch-black nights, raucous singing, fake blood, magical symbols, archaic rituals and ancient history: black metal's staging of the codes of darkness, evil, and the mysterious operates on a number of levels – the musical, sonical, discursive, visual, body-performative, and paratextual. But how exactly do the common aesthetic symbols of black metal function, and how are they to be understood and classified in their respective context? Using these questions as a starting point, the contributions to this volume offer nuanced insights into a complex musical and cultural contemporary phenomenon.
