Specific experiences of alterity often accompany art. According to a widely-held view, art emerges from and acts through alienation from the conventional – some progressive art even leads to affects of surprise and discomfort. Until now, however, the many diverse links between art and alterity have hardly been examined in detail. The essays presented here, from the fields of art philosophy and fine art, discuss the strange connections between art and the experience of alterity - with a particular but not exclusive focus on visual art – and in doing so invoke a new way of negotiating these thematic concerns.
