Summary

George R.R. Martin`s "A Song of Ice and Fire" / "Game of Thrones" has been fascinating a wide audience as well as critics writing for sophisticated culture sections. The interdisciplinary contributions included in this book trace the popularity of Martin's complex "secondary world" in its medial manifestations as a book, movie and computer game. At the same time the methodical versatility of the contributions (from the fields of literary studies, history, political science, film studies, theology, musicology, medieval and game studies) provides new perspectives on numerous contextual as well as poetic aspects of the "world of ice and fire" – from the parts religion and sexuality play and the dynamics of control and violence up to the function riddles and prophecies have.
