Summary
Nach den jüngsten politischen Umwälzungen in Nordafrika und dem Nahen Osten ist die wissenschaftliche Diskussion über die Stabilität autokratischer Regime wieder in den Vordergrund gerückt. Dieses Buch leistet einen theoretischen Beitrag aus Sicht der politischen Ökonomie, in dem es modelltheoretisch die Handlungsoption des Autokraten analysiert. Im Kern wird dabei eine Substitutionsbeziehung identifiziert, in der der Autokrat für das gegebene Maß der volkswirtschaftlichen Entwicklung ein optimales Maß an Repression gegenüberstellt. Dabei wird das absolute Niveau der Größen außer Acht gelassen und stattdessen Regimeinstabilität aus systemimmanenten Entwicklungen heraus erklärt, so dass der Rückgriff auf exogene Schocks nicht erforderlich ist.
