Summary

Anna Katharina Bahramian analyses the CS3D initiative and the resulting challenges for the EU's Africa strategy. The author provides a basic understanding of human rights, the European Africa strategy and the solutions adopted to date (including compliance and due diligence) and outlines the connection between the due diligence obligations of European companies and the economic development of the EU and Africa. The complex interplay between law, business, and politics for the effective implementation of due diligence obligations is explained. Using the extractive industry in South Africa as an example, the challenges of the practical application of CS3D are forecast and the effects on the Africa strategy are critically scrutinized.
