Summary

In 'de legibus', Cicero explores the principles of law. The law must follow the 'supreme law' that is anchored in nature, determines justice, and is recognizable through perfected reason. Cicero presents one of the first rationalist theories of natural law, whose legal-philosophical content has been largely overlooked in previous philological translations. For the first time, commentary and translation are provided by a legal philosopher, suitable for all those who seek a legally precise and philosophically reflective approach to Cicero’s work on the laws, as particular emphasis is placed on the accurate presentation of legal terms and concepts of legal philosophy.
