Summary
The architect Cäsar Pinnau (1906 – 1988) has always been heatedly disputed: Was he a significant representative of National Socialist architecture? Did he transfer his attitude to his work after 1945? Or did he remain committed to classicism transcending history throughout his life? Eduard Führ explores how the identity of an architect is developed – through the selective compilation of his work and imprecise dates, through the construction of a biography and through publications. This study shows how Pinnau himself designed identities for the state, companies and elites in his work, and discusses the question how the concepts of an analysis of Pinnau are being used for controversial identifications within the discipline of architecture.
