Summary

Without thinking about it much, we speak of a beautiful outfit, a sublime landscape, or a dense atmosphere. The occasionally overblown use of such 'aesthetic categories' challenge both fine arts and philosophy to continually test their analytical power. The articles in this volume consider eight classical and contemporary aesthetic categories: the beautiful, the sublime, the ugly, imitation, temporality, atmosphere, signs, and performativity. In a promising interplay between art-theoretical awareness and philosophical definition, their potential semantics are brought to a head.
