Summary

Western democracies are increasingly being challenged by authoritarian populism. The assumption that democratic learning experiences are irreversible has become questionable. Can we identify a stable trend towards ‘democratic regression’ (Schäfer/Zürn)? What are the criteria on which such a diagnosis can be based, and what are the possible causes of such developments?
