Summary

What has happened to Martin Luther King's vision of an America of equality, justice and self-determination? Fifty years on, the USA has on the one hand elected an African-American president, while on the other hand, the everyday experiences of African-Americans are characterized by police brutality, marginalization and racism. This volume traces who the civil rights movement in the USA has left behind, and asks what racism means today. From a cultural and social studies perspective, contributions present current organizational forms and strategies of political participation, protest and resistance.
