This book challenges the long-held image of Thomas Mann as an isolated exile fixated on Germany, and instead highlights his agility, flexibility and open-mindedness in German-American cultural exchange. The focus is on Thomas Mann’s adaptation of the American culture of lecturing, which he used as a medium for public intervention from 1938 onwards. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, some of which has not yet been examined in academic research, the study explores the interplay between mobility and marketing, textuality and performance, and redefines the significance of the lecture practice within Thomas Mann’s oeuvre in distinction to his essay writing. The study examines Mann’s role as a transatlantic mediator in various public contexts: in the academic milieu of his early years in exile, on large-scale nationwide lecture tours with political objectives, and in his work at the Library of Congress. Common to these different spheres is the fact that they were all integrated into the lecture circuit, a meta-institutional network linking market-driven entertainment, public education and political discourse. Through a detailed analysis of these connections, this study opens up new perspectives on Thomas Mann’s lecturing practice as a cultural and political contact zone and as a key form of transatlantic mediation in exile.
