Zusammenfassung

Nigeria beteiligt sich seit Jahrzehnten mit Truppen an der Bewältigung von Konflikten – im Rahmen der Vereinten Nationen und außerhalb. Geschieht dies aus nationalem Interesse oder aus multilateralen Verpflichtungen gegenüber den Vereinten Nationen? Stellvertretend für zahlreiche andere Truppensteller des „Globalen Südens“ wird das nigerianische Engagement in zahlreichen einzelnen Friedensmissionen anhand von Motiven und Entscheidungsprozessen untersucht. Dafür diskutiert der Autor in einem ersten Schritt das System der UN-Friedenssicherung aus Sicht der Truppenstellerstaaten. Im zweiten Schritt wird das außen- und sicherheitspolitische Profil Nigerias erstellt. Drittens erfolgt die Analyse wichtiger Beteiligungen Nigerias an Friedensmissionen. Am Ende resultieren daraus nicht nur Einsichten in dieses prominente Feld der nigerianischen Außenpolitik, sondern auch Erkenntnisse zur Nachhaltigkeit der UN-Friedenssicherung insgesamt.
