Zusammenfassung

Das Buch stellt die gängige Annahme in Frage, dass partizipative Mechanismen die Demokratie in Gesellschaften, die von Ungleichheit geprägt sind, stärken. Diese ignoriert die Art und Weise, in der sozialer und wirtschaftlicher Status die Gesellschaft ausdifferenziert. Das Buch entwickelt eine Gegenerzählung, ausgehend von den Realitäten eines südafrikanischen Townships und den dort vorherrschenden Machtstrukturen. Es beschreibt die vielfältigen Formen in denen sich Menschen politisch beteiligen und zeigt somit, dass politische Teilhabe, wie sie oftmals im globalen Norden imaginiert wird, ein Privileg nicht nur von Individuen, sondern auch von Gesellschaften ist. Ebenso offenbart sich (erneut) eine tiefe epistemologische Kluft zwischen den Annahmen der Eliten und den Perspektiven der „Regierten“.
