Zusammenfassung
Gegenstand des Buches sind die narrativen Friese mit Darstellung der beiden großen indischen Epen, Rāmāyaṇa und Mahābhārata, am 1637 erbauten Kṛṣṇa Tempel, einem der bedeutendsten Bauwerke im Kathmandutal. Die Friese sind in vielerlei Hinsicht herausragend: Es handelt sich um die einzigen umfassenden nepalesischen Darstellungen dieser Thematik, und der Mahābhārata-Zyklus ist der bei weitem umfangreichste in ganz Südasien. Das Buch enthält Abbildungen aller 255 Szenen, detaillierte Beschreibungen und Vergleiche mit indischen Vorbildern, wobei lokale Traditionen im Fokus stehen. Während einige Variationen eine lange Geschichte haben, sind andere weniger populär, und es sind auch Szenen zu sehen, die nirgendwo sonst abgebildet sind.
