Zusammenfassung

Ägypten zählt zu den Regionen mit dem höchsten Vorkommen weiblicher Genitalverstümmelung: 87 % der Frauen im Alter von 15 bis 49 Jahren sind dort beschnitten. Religiöse und vorgebliche gesundheitliche Gründe spielen eine wichtige Rolle für die andauernde Legitimation des Eingriffs. Doch haben MedizinerInnen, religiöse Gelehrte und andere Intellektuelle die Praktik bereits im frühen 20. Jahrhundert mithilfe medizinischer und islamrechtlicher Argumente infrage gestellt. Ausgehend von dieser Beobachtung erforscht die interdisziplinäre Studie den Wandel normativer Vorstellungen über weibliche Genitalverstümmelung von 1940 bis 2010. Sie macht für Ägypten somit zum ersten Mal nachvollziehbar, wann, wie und wodurch sich Positionen dazu verändern.
