Zusammenfassung

Dieses Buch befasst sich mit der Lebensgeschichte des bekannten irischen Nationalisten Francis „Frank“ Ryan, der sich zeit seines Lebens für die Wiedervereinigung der grünen Insel und die vollständige Unabhängigkeit von Großbritannien eingesetzt hat. Seine linksgerichteten politischen Überzeugungen führten ihn als Kämpfer für die republikanische Regierung nach Spanien. Dort kämpfte er in den Reihen der Internationalen Brigaden und geriet als Francos wichtiger Gefangener in die Hände der Faschisten. Durch die Intervention der deutschen Abwehr kam er frei und fand sich im Deutschland der 1940er Jahre wieder. Vor dem Hintergrund seiner Lebensgeschichte wird auch die Entwicklung der politischen Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Irland beleuchtet.
