Zusammenfassung

Das neunzehnte Jahrhundert in Großbritannien war geprägt von technologischen, politischen und gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen, die sich auch medial bemerkbar machten: Die Printmedien eröffneten einen Massenmarkt, der mit Publikationen für beinahe jede Bevölkerungsgruppe und verschiedenste Interessen aufwartete. Der gesellschaftliche Wandel ging zudem mit einem verstärkten Bedürfnis nach Orientierung einher, das in vielen Publikationen mithilfe der Semantik des Heroischen gestillt wurde. Als Leit- und Orientierungsfiguren sollten Helden Anhaltspunkte für die Leserschaft bieten. Durch die Untersuchung von Chambers’s Journal, Fraser’s Magazine, und Leisure Hour fächert der vorliegende Band verschiedene Konzeptionen des Heroischen auf dem viktorianischen Printmarkt auf und zeigt, welche unterschiedlichen didaktischen, sozialen und politischen Funktionalisierungen dem Heroischen innerhalb der sich verändernden Machtstrukturen für verschiedene Leserschichten zukamen.
