Previous research shows that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is often accompanied by anthropomorphization, manifested, for example in the attribution of human-like roles to AI systems. However, anthropomorphization has rarely been studied in the context of generative AI—a crucial research gap given its increasing use and communicative character, distinguishing it from other forms of AI. This qualitative study analyzes how communication studies and computer science students—as early adopters of generative AI—use this technology and which anthropomorphising roles they attribute to ChatGPT. The results show that students use ChatGPT primarily to boost productivity and generate ideas, which influences their attribution of anthropomorphizing roles to this technology. While most students consciously classify ChatGPT as a tool or as assistance, their implicit use practices reveal a perception of it as a partner. These findings extend the dual model of anthropomorphization. From a societal perspective, they suggest that raising awareness of contradictions in (non-)anthropomorphization may promote AI literacy.
