In the past couple of years, Germany, too has witnessed the development of a particular kind of philosophy which exists independently from and outside of its academic institutionalization. Since this form of philosophy reaches a larger readership than academic philosophy can ever hope to, it may rightfully be called "popular philosophy." In this essay, the philosopher Daniel-Pascal Zorn deals with the question of what distinguishes popular philosophy from its academic counterpart. The author not only presents the reservations of academic philosophy against its successful twin, but also criticizes these reservations. The result of such a dialectical distinction is the unsuspected and equally convincing suggestion that there is yet another philosophy which is at loss to distinguish its own position by either popular or academic acclaim. It is, quite surprisingly, nothing else but: philosophy itself.
