Summary
The design and deciphering of the urban take place at multiple levels of social configurations and artistic perceptions simultaneously. The city has thus served as way of life, projection, image, and imaginary habitat, which has shaped one of the key programmatic themes in literature, painting, film, and music since the 19th and 20 centuries.Expressly musical interpretations are central to this volume. The articles provide insight into the diversity of artistic urban inventions and examine them on the basis of different cities – portraits of differentiated reactions to the municipal, scope, and forms of expression as well as past and present urban imaginations.
