The guiding principle of "sustainability" has an impact on almost all areas of society. It shapes political, economic and scientific debates as well as individual practices and processes of structural change. The term has a generally positive connotation - it is, however, understood in very different ways, and is sometimes instrumentalised. The contributions in this volume attempt to provide clarity and question the topic of sustainability from a variety of sociological perspectives: What social dynamics are associated with sustainability and what discourses? They deal with topics such as mobility, work, religion and the future, taking different sociological theories as their starting point.
