Summary

Das Buch analysiert die sich wandelnde Selbstwahrnehmung türkischer Entscheidungsträger hinsichtlich der regionalen Außenpolitik der Türkei im Nahen Osten zwischen 1983 und 2002. Es wird untersucht, wie sich die türkische Selbstwahrnehmung seit der Militärintervention 1980 bis zum Amtsantritt der Partei für Gerechtigkeit und Entwicklung von Recep Tayyip Erdoğan im Jahr 2002 von einem Brückenland (köprüülke) zu einem zentralen Land (merkezülke) oder einem Schlüsselstaat veränderte und welche Faktoren diese Veränderungen erklären können. Es wird argumentiert, dass die sich verändernde regionale Selbstwahrnehmung der Türkei immer im Kontext und in Wechselwirkung mit nationalen und internationalen Transformationsprozessen und der Spannung zwischen Nationalismus und Islam innerhalb der Türkei gesehen werden muss. Das Buch erweitert das Bild der Türkei im Bereich der Nahoststudien.
