Der historisch jüngste Globalisierungsschub stellt eine Herausforderung für die regionale Integration in Europa dar. Seine Wurzeln liegen in den „langen“ 1970er Jahren der europäischen Integrationsgeschichte von 1969 bis Mitte der achtziger Jahre, die als ein Prozess der Adaption an die globalen Transformationen verstanden werden können. Die Reaktionen und Strategien der unterschiedlichen europäischen Akteure werden hier zum Teil erstmals auf der Grundlage neu zugänglicher Quellen aus internationalen Archiven in den Blick genommen.
Der Band analysiert das Handlungspotential im Hinblick auf die Ostpolitik der Gemeinschaft, den Nord-Süd-Dialog, die Anbahnung von Beziehungen mit den Ländern Asiens und die neuen Interdependenzthemen wie Währungs-, Umwelt- und Energiefragen. In der Summe der Beiträge wird deutlich, dass der Globalisierungsschub seit den 1970er Jahren nicht zu einem Bedeutungsverlust der Europäischen Gemeinschaft, sondern zu einer Neuausrichtung und ihrer Stärkung geführt hat.
