Die ZaöRV erscheint seit 1929 unter der Leitung des Max-Planck-Instituts für ausländisches öffentliches Recht und Völkerrecht, Heidelberg. Ihr englischer Name lautet Heidelberg Journal of International Law (HJIL). Die Zeitschrift ist ein Forum für die Diskussion grundlegender und aktueller Probleme des Völkerrechts, Unionsrechts, der Rechtsvergleichung und gelegentlich Themen des öffentlichen Rechts in EU Mitgliedstaaten und darüber hinaus. Ihr Ziel ist es, im Bereich dieser Themenfelder eine geographische, inhaltliche und methodische Vielfalt abzubilden. Die Zeitschrift ist zweisprachig (deutsch und englisch). Alle deutschsprachigen Beiträge werden durch englische Abstracts und Übersetzung ihrer Titel diesem Leserkreis erschlossen.
