Summary

This book features the work of scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds. Contributions to this interdisciplinary volume combine conceptualisations of »recognition« based on social theory with a critical understanding of »visibility«. Via theories of social justice, postcolonial studies, and queer_feminist perspectives, the empirical contributions explore different media formats and ways that media interact with and act in (digital) publics such as film, television, photography, journalism, and "social" media. The authors demonstrate how media cultures can often employ visibility for recognition, but also for contempt, vulnerability, and control. Additionally, they show how to disrupt established norms of recognition and visibility.
