»Clean torture« is surrounded by absence. Its victims disappear without a trace in extrajudicial space. Its practitioners leave no traces on the body. It breaks the subject deep inside. Carola Hilbrand boldly approaches the topic of clean torture – which has been used for decades in prison camps as a defense strategy by democracies - through the lenses of Media and Cultural Studies. With a model of analytical theatricality, she lays bare the destructive-performative mechanisms of practices of torture, which are invisible and unspeakable – on the body, in language, in discourse.
