Summary

What is the future of rural areas in an urbanised world? This question is controversially discussed in politics, media and science. Critical rural research can make an important contribution to this by addressing conflicts and contradictions, but also utopias of rural development. This volume provides an introduction to important concepts, topics and political perspectives of critical rural research. Rural areas, according to the central finding, are not a "residual category" beyond big cities, but an important starting point for the analysis and transformation of social conditions.
