The city consists of a multitude of social, political and architectural spaces, economic structures, historical contexts and chance encounters. But how can the (experience of the) city be described when it is too vast for any one individual? Birgit Szepanski shows that contemporary artists generate a `narrated city' through post-structural storytelling techniques, thus enabling the representation of the city in all of its complexity. In analyses of works by Jane Cardiff and Jeff Wall, procedures which form references between the visual arts, literature, film, everyday events, politics, history and biographical histories are presented that narrate the city in its diversity.
