Summary

During the Migration Period, numerous barbarian groups such as the Goths, Lombards and Vandals migrated into the Roman world and founded their own kingdoms there. This volume examines the cultural encounters which arose between the barbarian immigrants and the indigenous Romanised population. These contacts could be of a peaceful nature and result in cultural exchange processes both sides benefited from. Frequently, however, the encounters also turned into conflict and excessive violence, which the volume also deals with.
