Summary
Our daily life is not just shaped by technologically generated virtual reality – in many areas, it is actually determined by it. The information society in which we live cultivates a natural relationship with devices that are always undergoing further development. Written off as mere semblance or unreality, the new phenomena of virtuality remain widely unreflected upon. Tobias Holischka's phenomenological analysis shows that the 'virtual place' as an assembling principle in particular is able to create a reality, one which – in marked contrast to the abstract concept of cyberspace – produces an ontological connection to the everyday human world, and which expands this reality in the process.
