Summary

This volume continues the exploration of the conglomerate of politically guided culture in Europe. In vividly moving tableaux and clear analyses, the following intertwine: varieties of the Reformation and confessionalization; “national” religious wars and the European Thirty Years' War; the Habsburg Empire; the “absolute” French monarchy with its court culture and expansionism; the Dutch and Swiss republic experiments; the English parliamentary model of kingship and liberal enlightenment; veritable revolutions in North America and France. After 1800, the old powers returned to Europe and ushered in the nationalist maelstrom of the 19th century.
