Summary

With its step-by-step analysis of letters, complex spellings, graphemes and syllables in Italian, this work is the first of its kind: it lays the foundation for Italian graphematics. It reveals new regularities and spelling principles that mainly, but not exclusively, shed light on the Italian writing system. Moreover, this work can also be read as a methodological work on contrastive graphematics. By applying existing methods and developing new ones, the author highlights various comparison parameters that can be used both to compare individual languages and to construct a graphematic typology of Latin-alphabetic writing systems.
