Summary

[Church of the Word. Effects and Effectiveness of the Gospel] The church, according to the Protestant understanding, is the church of the Word. In spite of all confessional differences, this position constitutes the shared fundamental conviction of the churches which emerged from the Reformation of the 16th century. The subject of this book are the effects and the effectiveness that the Gospel still has today. Nevertheless, in the present context, many voices claim that the church of the Word, at least as it is embodied by national churches, has come to an end. Some propose to give up on the concept of the church altogether and would rather speak of diverse instantiations of Christianity as a form of life. This book expounds the reasons why even the Christianity of tomorrow cannot do without the concept of the church, regardless of how plural its current and future concretions may be.
