Summary
This book offers readers a nuanced approach to one of the largest, yet in the German-speaking world barely researched, pilgrimage movements of the present day: the Shia Arba'in pilgrimage to Karbala. Drawing on 21 episodic interviews, the study shows how women in midlife experience the journey as a space for spiritual transformation, religious agency, embodied piety and transnational community. At the centre is Zaynab bint Ali as a model of female religious authority. An excursus on the Camino de Santiago sharpens the distinctive features of this experience in comparison with Western post-secular forms of female pilgrimage.
