Accounting scandals often lead to public discussions about the role of external supervisory bodies of the companies concerned. Auditors in particular are the focus of criticism and are denounced by the public for their (alleged) misconduct. The regulator regularly uses this outrage as an opportunity to introduce stricter regulations. The extent to which the criticism of auditors is actually justified or whether it is a case of media prejudgement often remains unclear. The question also arises as to whether state regulation is really necessary. Against this background, this study examines the public discourse on auditing and its effects in the context of the Wirecard accounting scandal. It examines the behavior of auditors, the media, regulators and the public with regard to the enforcement of their respective particular interests.
