Summary

For years in the political public sphere and academia there has been great debate over which language about Islam can be viewed as a legitimate part of democratic debates, and which language is inappropriate. Florian Biskamp takes these conflicts as a starting point for a theoretical discussion of negotiations of cultural difference in the democratic public sphere. He demonstrates the reductionist nature of the common concepts of Islamophobia, hatred of Islam and anti-Muslim racism. In order to overcome these prejudices, he uses contemporary critical theory and post-colonial theory to develop a concept of racism as a systematically biased form of communication.
