The two texts of the Marburg theologian Wilhelm Herrmann presented in this volume remain of highest interest, as they unfold basic suppositions of Christian faith in debating positions of scientific naturalism and critical historicism, the two most powerful tendencies in modern cultural world. Herrmann shows that the reality of God critically restrains the claims of science and that Christian faith continuously relies on the historical presence of Jesus Christ notwithstanding the principles of historical criticism. Herrmann arguments are based upon an understanding of faith as basically for human individuality within modern history.
