Summary
In the third and final volume of the edition, the work of Franz von Gaudy (1800-1840) is presented in all its contrasting diversity: romantic, partly religious-pietistic texts at the beginning, tragic verse epics on political Poland and the traditional talking dog Berganza. Then the broad spectrum of satires: ironic ones on antiquity, sharp and amusing ones on the army, a grotesque Don Juan satire alongside the genre picture of a pure love of the soul. Cheerful and serious novellas as critical social portraits of historical personalities, quiet citizens, old military men, artists looking for their place and the nobility in inevitable decline – impressive testimonies to the Biedermeier and Vormärz periods.
