Summary

Since its discovery in 1865, the cemetery of Wiskiauten/Mochovoe in Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, with its 250 burial mounds and rich grave goods, has been a key find for the history of the Prussians and Scandinavians in the Baltic region. However, archaeological research was severely hampered by the loss of finds and records during the Second World War. Since the 1990s, rediscovered pre-war German archives and objects have enabled modern analysis, including the results of Soviet-Russian research. This volume presents a completely new view of the necropolis as a polyethnic burial site, shedding light on the intercultural dynamics of the Viking Age from the 9th to the 11th century on the southern Baltic coast.
