People who educates themselves makes themselves in God's image. This medieval understanding of education has returned in the present-day education system, albeit with an economic twist? God has simply been replaced by money. In a neoliberal economic society in which money has obtained godlike status, humans and nature become symbolic reproductions of money. In such times of economization, education ends up being dressed up in humanistic robes, creating the deceitful impression that the Humboldtian ideal of education is still valid. This essay discusses the genesis and ongoing requirements of self-certification of our all-pervasive culture of money and the role of self-directed learning within it.
