Summary
The French philosopher Denis Diderot is considered one of the most brilliant minds of the European Enlightenment. He became famous as the editor of the epochal "Encyclopédie" (1751-1772). He also made a name for himself as a publicist and writer, as a playwright, as a scholar of art and music, and finally as a pioneer of democracy. Schiller praised his ideas as "sparks of light", Nietzsche honoured him as the "first spirit of the new France". Werner Raupp combines a biography of the polymath with a mosaic of 100 of the philosopher's thoughts. In addition to short aphorisms, there are also longer reflections and excerpts from novels and letters, which are intended to inspire the reader to think. Werner Raupp studied philosophy, theology and modern history in Mainz and Tübingen. He works as a freelance author and teaches at colleges and universities. He is co-founder of the humanistic-philosophical study group 'Tusculum' and co-editor of the journal 'Aufklärung & Kritik'. The main focus of his work is modern intellectual history.
