Summary

The end of the Soviet Union in December 1991 is the starting point of "The Post-Soviet Experience: Society and Everyday Life after Communism". The richly illustrated companion volume to the eponymous exhibition impressively documents the changes that the fifteen successor states have undergone since then. Geographically, the view ranges from Eastern Europe to the Caucasus and Central Asia. It includes states whose size and population, national history and cultural imprint as well as economic starting positions could hardly be more different. All the more impressive are the commonalities that shaped the everyday life of these societies, especially in the 1990s.
