Architecture is put to use. Its expression is of fundamental significance for our wellbeing. In light of this, architectural theory should direct its gaze towards people's `living environments' – and not restrict itself to exchanges between architects and architectural critics. Achim Hahn shows that architecture is becoming a kind of empirical science that investigates the experiences of people with architecture. He interrogates key terms such as 'living', 'space', 'design', and 'landscape' in terms of their pre-theoretical meaning for the first time, and in doing so secures them as the basis of theoretical constructions.
