Summary
Increasing physical performance with the aid of pharmacological substances is an old human dream – and their use in sport an old phenomenon. What is relatively new, however, is the condemnation, prosecution and sanctioning of such activity as illegitimate 'doping'. Since the 1980s, monitoring practices have been established that are unrivalled outside the context of competitive sport. Marcel Reinold questions the meaning-generating processes that established doping as a deviant practice.
