Karl Kaufmann: Supreme National Socialist in the north of the Rhineland, the Ruhr area and Hamburg. He helped to build up National Socialism, shaped it, was a main figure of the "left" wing, tried to reassert the ideology after 1945. Who was he and where did he stand in National Socialism? In this volume, the author examines one of the most important and powerful Gauleiter, Reichsstatthalter and state government leader of the NSDAP. The focus is on his relationship to National Socialism as an ideology and system: what did he accomplish himself, where did he stand in ideology and party, what drove him, what were the consequences? Dr Daniel Meis researches and teaches at the Universities of Düsseldorf and Stuttgart on biographies, National Socialism and regional history, among other topics.
