That humans alter the climate is no insight of the last few decades. As early as the late 18th century, people had begun to contemplate the mutual transformations of humanity and nature. The essays in this volume of the `Journal for Cultural Studies' deal with forms of knowledge and representation of climate around the turn of the 19th century, thus showing that it is here that the roots of the contemplations on the topic of the anthropocene are to be found.
